Tyler Cates was killed in Iraq yesterday. I sat by Tyler for 3 years in marching band as he was in my baritone section- he was one of my friends. I remember him helping me out with a girl one time in 10th grade… and I remember how we would always challenge each other in our baritone playing… he could always play about 3 or 4 notes higher than me and I never could seem to get that. He was silly in a goofy way most of the time but he knew when to be serious. The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago in Rivergate mall, he told me then he was going into the military. There have only been a very small handful of people that I have actually known personally that have died… one that comes to mind is Brett, a guy who was on the tennis team and died in a car wreck when i was in 10th grade… other than that, the funerals I’ve been to have either been for relatives who have lived full and what I would consider complete lives, or people I did not know in a personal way. This hits home with me. I guess this is just another reminder that life is too short for us to not love everyone and that we should cherish every moment we have been blessed with. Our end could come at any time, and that only makes me want to make the most of every opportunity that I have been given.
