Being Scott Malcovitch
You wake up and look at the clock… “10:55?!”
It’s the first time you have slept through your alarm on a Sunday morning this entire school year… and there is less than a week left. “Man, that stinks… I really wanted to go to church” you think. You need the encouragement to make it through these exams. Part of the problem might have been staying up till midnight or later in the library since the past Tuesday night… You go to the kitchen and open up your food cabinet to get something to eat. You see five cans of soup, three packages of spegetti, some bread, some peanut butter, some trail mix, and some boxes of cereal. You grab a can of chunky beef-vegetable soup and heat it up for three minutes. After eating your soup with a glass of water you decide its time to get going- you’ve got a long day ahead of you. You grab your books and head to the library…. The time is now 11:30 AM. You find the same spot you’ve been studying in all week and get to it. After a few hours another Biochemistry classmate joins you, and that always helps… studying alone is well… lonely….
The library that has been totally empty all week with people actually taking their days off school to go do fun things is now totally packed with people… you have to ignore lots of people walking by and talking loudly about their psychology 101 classes and how their multiple choice tests are going to be the death of them on Monday… you roll your eyes.
5:45 rolls around and you and your Biochemistry friend decide to go get some pizza on the strip. He has a friend that can get it half price. At 6:30 you leave the pizza place and drop your friend back at the library and head to church. You sing the songs and you listen to the lesson, but all you can think about is how much your future depends on the next two days… every prayer has to compete with organic compounds, DNA replication, cell life-cycles, the steps of carbohydrate Killiani-Fischer synthesis and Ruff degradation, Polyacrylamide gel-electrophoresis, differential centrifugation, and most of all Pharmacy school… You get back to the library a little after 8 and get back to studying… 4 hours later the main part of the library closes down and you have to go upstairs to the part that is open past midnight. Your friend leaves to go get some sleep and you are on your own. You find a computer and read a scientific journal article for your biochemistry take home question for 15% of the final… you write your answer and go back to studying…. At 4am you realize you need to get another book to study from… you walk back to your apartment, get the book, brush your teeth, and head back to study. The streets are deserted and you feel a sense of relaxation. The campus is yours.
You study until 7:30AM and then go to your first exam, stopping to get two bananas and a drink from starbucks. You get to your class and look over afew more things.. your professor hands you your 7 page exam with one question at the top of the first 6 pages and some definition type questions on the last page. You completely cover the first 6 pages with answering the questions. You even fill up the back of about four of the pages… you leave the test feeling good about not having to think about Advanced Cell Biology for as long as humanly possible… you go directly back to the library and find your biochemistry friend and study for another hour and a half taking a 15 minute nap in the middle unintentionally. You go to Smokeys and eat a quick lunch and head directly to your second exam. This one doesn’t exactly help your writers cramp with 8 pages of essay questions to fill out… completely… you finish up and head back to the room. You arrive at 3:15 PM and your Bed has never looked so good. You decide its time for some sleep. You wake up and its about 6:30 PM. You eat some dinner and head back to the library. You study till midnight and head back to the study room in your apartment. You stay in that room- feeling almost sick from the last 24 hours of thinking about nothing but your grades… you figure up that you only have to make a 65% on the final exam to ensure that you will definitely get a C and never have to take organic again. At 3:00 AM you look up and see that the only other person in the study room has fallen asleep on the couch… you decide that afew hours would probably help you think clearly and sleep from 3:15AM- to 5:45AM… After studying from then till 7AM you go up the four flights of stairs with your backpack that seems twice as heavy as usual and meet your roommate to go to breakfast… You eat breakfast at Smokey’s and head to your test. The test goes fine and you feel that you at least were able to get a C… that’s all that matters to you. No more Organic Chemistry- no more Biochemistry… you feel like a 200 lb weight has been lifted off you and you walk back to your room taking in the beautiful day. You decide that maybe everything is going to be ok... this world can't keep you from succeeding when you put your heart into it....
