pharmacy student version 2.0

Scott here… well I figure I’ll recap the past weekend since it was semi-eventful. We had our white coat ceremony- click there to see some pictures- should at least work for all you facebook people, if not let me know- … my parents and grandparents came in from out of town for the occasion. We went out to a local Barbeque place that everyone seemed to love (its pretty good) and had the same waiter that we had the last time we went there as a family on August 1st to help me move in… after that I took everyone over to my school and gave a quick tour of the campus. My classroom was locked, but I got to show everyone the building and we took a few pictures. We did see a plaque for Joe Johnson (one of the most successful presidents of UT and one of the main proponents of the medical school there), who one our buildings is named after… my grandparents know him from their church back in knoxville, so that was cool. After that we went back to my house and I showed them around and we hung out in my room for awhile and I ended up checking everyone’s blood pressure back downstairs in the kitchen. After that I took a 20 minute nap and changed clothes and met my parents at the holiday in select over by the airport… they had a big nice place set up for us… I’d say there were about 300-400 people there total. We had some prime-rib and sat through several presentations from representatives from Walgreen's and CVS and then they gave us our coats… they were starched real tight so everyone thought their coat was too small, but you could kind of pull them loose on the sides where they were bunched up and they fit better. Mine has my name on the front pocket and the UT College of pharmacy patch on the left sleeve… (everyone’s is like that actually- except replace my name with theirs…)… it was a good time. In the course of the night my dad and grandma picked out about 30 girls they thought were very attractive that they thought I should ask out… they meant well and its nice to have that unconditional approval of a parent. Even the girls I have no business wasting my time talking to, in their eyes I’ve got a good shot. I’m sure its somewhere between those two extremes in reality, hard for me to tell. But I really had a pretty good night all in all… we took some pictures (it was really hot)… they stayed that night in the hotel and then we went to church together on Sunday and had a good time there, afterwards we went to eat Mexican food which wasn’t as good as I expected, but we weren’t really there for the food, ya know? How does the white coat change things? i've been asked by afew non-pharmacy parties... well it doesnt really... its not what we wear or what title goes at the end of our names (when we graduate) that makes us good clinicians- its still all about what you know and how you use it, but for practical purposes, its an unofficial marker of the transition of us being students in a class room to students working in clinical settings under preceptors (not unlike an apprentice-master relationship), two very different types of learning... and its one of those things... when you get here to school you see the big upperclassmen wearing the nice coats with their names and patches and you just set your sights on that as a mark of "making it" in the pharmacy world... so thats nice-

Ok… well there is a big test on Monday and I’ve got a lot of work to do to get ready for it… so here I go- Scott
